Change deductible

The higher the deductible, the lower your premium. Changes always take effect from the next 1 January.

Choose the right deductible

  • Deductible of CHF 2,500 – sensible for healthcare costs below CHF 1,800.
  • Deductible of CHF 300 – sensible for healthcare costs above CHF 1,800.
  • You can change the deductible each year. You have until 30 November to request a reduction and until 31 December to request an increase.

Let’s start with your client number

You can find the 8-digit number on your insurance card or on a CSS document.

Everything you need to know about the deductible

The deductible is an important part of your health insurance. It determines how much you yourself pay towards your healthcare costs. After that, your insurance pays a share of the costs.

Choosing your deductible

Under basic insurance, the mandatory deductible is CHF 300 for adults and CHF 0 for children. You can change this amount.

Optional deductible for adults

  • CHF 300 (mandatory deductible)
  • CHF 500
  • CHF 1'000
  • CHF 1'500
  • CHF 2'000
  • CHF 2'500

Optional deductible for children

  • CHF 0 (mandatory deductible)
  • CHF 100
  • CHF 200
  • CHF 300
  • CHF 400
  • CHF 600

Co-payment with a higher deductible

A higher deductible means that you will have to pay more costs out of your own pocket when faced with high medical bills. If you choose a deductible of CHF 2,500, for example, that is the amount you will have to pay. You will be charged a retention fee of 10%, capped at CHF 700, on any costs that exceed the deductible. If you are hospitalised, you are additionally expected to contribute CHF 15 for each day of your stay. All of these together make up your co-payment. If choosing the highest deductible, we therefore recommend that you have at least CHF 3,200 in reserve.

Save up to CHF 1,540 with a higher deductible

You pay less for basic insurance if you choose the highest deductible (CHF 2,500 for adults, CHF 600 for children). Adults can save up to CHF 1,540 and children up to CHF 420. The discount depends on the deductible and is limited by law.
